Rowan Vine says his goal 'doesn't mean a lot' after seeing Gillingham lose to Dagenham

Striker Rowan Vine dismissed his first goal in 13 months as 'irrelevant' after the Gills failed to see off struggling Dagenham on Monday.

Vine's first goal in Gillingham colours levelled the scores at 1-1 but the on-loan QPR front-man then saw his adopted team throw it all away and lose 2-1.

Defeat left Gillingham's play-off chances now on a knife-edge and the 29-year-old was in no mood to celebrate what was an impressive personal feat.

He said: "It was nice to score but I haven't come here for individual success. It was a nice finish but it's irrelevant.

"I have come to a team that should be in the play-offs. We still feel we have a chance but it doesn't mean a lot (to score) if you don't pick up a point.

"We were frustrated and disappointed. We didn't play brilliant and we didn't play like a team who wanted to go out there and take the initiative and win a game against a team we should be taking the game to and beating.

"We knew how they were going to play. Players have played against them before and they don't change things much. We need to stand up as a team and as players and play like a team that want to be in the play-offs. I don't think we did that on Monday.

"We were good at Bristol Rovers (on Friday) and we took the game to them, on a tough pitch in tough conditions, and were unlucky (not to win) but I don't think we were unlucky on Monday."

Defeat leaves the Gills it all to do ahead of a crunch meeting with Oxford this weekend.

"There are four games left and we have to win them all probably," he said.

"I think Oxford and Cheltenham's form is definitely worse than ours and the pressure is going to be on them. There will be a lot of fans there and we need to go with the intention of going to win the game."

Vine's last goal came in March 2011 during a loan spell with MK Dons. He has played five games for the Gills and believes there is enough quality in the side to be achieving better results than on Monday.

He said: "It's a good squad but we don't want the season to peter out. The squad the manager has assembled is capable of producing results and that's what we need to do.

"We have been the best football side in every game I have been in. We want to play the game the right way but if you are top or in the automatic positions you can maybe force the game more but we need to win games and we need to mix it up now and then.

"People will write us off, as there are only four games left and our results haven't been great, but we need the fans to come with us to Oxford. We are going to try and win that game.

"The performance is secondary. If we beat them we roll onto the next game."
