Tributes have been paid to a rugby player who died after collapsing during a match in Broadstairs.

Joe Payne, believed to be 47, fell ill during a Thanet Wanderers' game on Saturday afternoon.

The father-of-three was taken to hospital, but later died despite the best efforts of medics.

He played for Thanet Wanderers 5th XV and coached the club's under-14s squad.

Tributes were paid to Mr Payne by fellow club members.

Ian Lodge said: "Joe was a much bigger part of the club then he ever knew. A coach, a player and an all round good guy. Sleep easy, big fella and know we all loved you."

A statement on the Thanet Wanderers' website said: "I'm sorry to have to inform you all of the death of Joe Payne.

"Joe collapsed during the 5th team fixture against Snowdown 2nds.

"Despite the intensive efforts of the ambulance service and doctors, he passed away in hospital.

"I'm sure that we will all keep Joe and his family in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time."
