Margate came back from 2-0 down inside half an hour to record a 2-2 draw at home to Canvey Island in their opening Ryman League Premier Division game on Saturday.

Shortly before the break Craig Cloke pulled the first goal back for Gate on his debut for the side after nine years with Dover before sub Dean Grant ensured a share of the points with a stunning volley 11 minutes from time.

Promotion hopefuls Tonbridge Angels got off to a disappointing start with a 3-0 defeat at Billericay which left them bottom of the table.

After a goalless first half three goals in 12 minutes from the hosts was enough to secure the points.

Folkestone Invicta lost their first game back in the division 2-0 at home to fellow promotees Croydon Athletic.

Missing five key players Invicta were 2-0 down after 34 minutes and despite stemming the tide, and going close through Paul Jones (pictured) the hosts were unable to find a breakthrough.

Meanwhile Cray Wanderers lost 1-0 10 an 11th minute goal at AFC Hornchurch and Maidstone United were fortunate to only suffer a 2-0 defeat at Harrow Borough, Simon Glover scoring a second-half own goal after journeyman Rocky Baptiste had opened the scoring.
