Former Chelsea defender Jon Harley goes on the attack for Maidstone in their 2-0 victory over Eastbourne Picture: Martin Apps
Maidstone United made the most of the all-weather pitch at the Gallagher Stadium to maintain their position at the top of Ryman League Division 1 South on Saturday.
The Stones' game with Eastbourne Town was one of only four matches to go ahead in the division because of the weather and Jay Saunders' side eased to a 2-0 victory thanks to goals in each half from Shaun Welford (penalty) and Ade Olorunda. It meant a winning Stones' debut for former Chelsea FA Cup winner Jon Harley.
Second-placed Dulwich Hamlet remain three points behind Maidstone following their 3-0 victory over Whitstable. The Stones take on Dulwich in a potential title-decider at Champion Hill on Tuesday night.
Faversham Town, in third place, had Wayne Wilson sent off midway through the first half as they lost 2-1 at home to Worthing.
The Lilywhites had taken the lead a minute earlier through Dave Botterill but Worthing made the most of their man advantage to score twice in the second half through Jamie Brotherton.
Folkestone Invicta strengthened their play-off chances with a 5-0 home victory over a Walton & Hersham side who had goalkeeper Audie Matheson sent off just after half-time for bringing down Josh Burchell on the edge of the area.
Invicta were already 3-0 ahead by that stage through Darren Smith (penalty), Richard Atkins and Burchell, and then further goals followed from Smith and Frankie Chappell.
In the Ryman Premier Division, Margate player-manager Craig Holloway pulled off a stunning 97th-minute penalty save to earn his side a 2-2 draw with play-off rivals Canvey Island.
Trailing 2-0 after just eight minutes, Margate pulled a goal back midway through the first half through Matt Bodkin. Jamie Hand then equalised from an injury-time penalty and moments later Holloway produced his crucial spot kick save at the other end.
