MORE than half the top managers working for Medway Council will get pay increases following a decision to bring their jobs into line with London wages.
An internal review chaired by an independent chairman of the 284 assistant directors and principal managers posts says they will each earn between £24,048 and £65,043 a year.
Of the posts, 191 staff will gain immediately or will move to new grades with more opportunities for pay rises. But 15 will lose out on future pay rises and another 36 will have their salary protected for up to eight years. The changes are expected to cost £77,000 this year and a further £750,000 over the next five years.
Many of the affected staff have not commented, but it means more senior managers will be recognised as assistant directors, says a report.
They will all have to give three months' notice - something that has raised some objections but will get an extra £4,500 a year to provide a car for council use. Currently they get a £4,000 a year car allowance.
One officer said: "I object to having to give an extra month's notice at the same time as my pay is being reduced."
