Maidstone United failed to secure a Ryman League Division 1 South play-off place on the final day, but have played their last 'home' game on the road before returning to the county town this summer.
Stones needed to beat title-chasing Bognor Regis Town and hope Eastbourne overcame Godalming Town to sneak into the final play-off place.
Shaun Welford (pictured) looked to have got the final touch to an inswinging set-piece to give the hosts a perfect start after 10 minutes at Bourne Park, and the majority of the crowd of more than 700 were delighted when the big front-man made it 2-0 a minute before the break with his 32nd of the campaign.
However after the interval the visitors were playing with the wind behind them and they halved the deficit on 58 minutes before equalising five minutes later.
With news filtering through that Godalming were 4-0 up the promotion race was over for Stones and it was Bognor who grabbed the fifth goal on 72 minutes and sealed the win 10 minutes from time.
However they were also disappointed as Whitehawk's win meant Bognor were second and face a play-off campaign.
If they can overcome Godalming, Bognor will face the winner of Tuesday night's Dulwich Hamlet v Folkestone Invicta last-four clash in the final next Sunday.
Inspirational captain Dave Cook salvaged a point for Hythe Town four minutes from time as they ended their debut season in Division 1 South in a fine eighth-place with a 1-1 draw at Merstham.
Ramsgate played almost the entire game with 10-men at Southwood against Walton Casuals.
Tom Hickman was dismissed for handball on the line inside three minutes and the subsequent penalty and goals on 32 and 43 minutes gave the Rams a mountain to climb before Ian Pulman pulled back a second-half consolation as the Rams finished 11th.
Sittingbourne's dismal season is thankfully over, but it reached a new low with a 4-0 defeat at Walton & Hersham in boss Joe Dowley's final game at the helm.
Bourne eventually stayed up by just two points as Whitstable Town's miserable end to the campaign was completed by a 2-0 reverse at basement-boys Whyteleafe, who were relegated despite their victory.
The Oystermen finished 18th, behind Faversham Town on goal difference after the Lilywhites lost 3-1 at home to Corinthian Casuals.
Margate were punished for a poor display at Canvey Island, going down 5-0 in their final Premier Division game of the season.
A goal behind after just two minutes, the Gate were 2-0 down inside 18 and trailed 3-0 at half-time.
Two further Canvey goals added to their misery as Chris Kinnear's side finished the campaign in 15th place.
Cray Wanderers rounded-off their season with a 3-1 home win over Horsham to leave them ninth.
Thamesmead Town ended their season in Division 1 North by being edged out by Tilbury in a seven-goal thriller at Bayliss Avenue.
The result was particularly harsh on Rikki Cable whose hat-trick included a goal inside the opening 36 seconds.
Goals from Tom Wraight (four minutes) and Gary Henty (22) had Tilbury ahead at half-time, but two goals from Cable, one a deflected effort after a fine run, and the other direct from a corner, put Mead 3-2 in front, only for Aaron Matthews (63 minutes) and Paul King (79 minutes) to tip the balance the way of the visitors.
Chatham Town's game at Redbridge was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. The game is now likely to be played at the Oakside on Monday.
