School run cars 'blocked in'

PARENTS are angry because they say a pub landlord is deliberately blocking their cars into his car park during the school run.

Double yellow lines painted onto the roads near Parkwood Junior School, Rainham, by Medway Council, have already made parking difficult for parents dropping their children off at school.

Jenny Harrington, of Lyndhurst Avenue, Rainham, said that for years, parents have parked in the Cherry Orchard pub car park nearby, while taking their children to school. But now the pub landlord had taken to blocking their cars in, she said.

“There are no signs saying it’s a private car park, nor that we can’t park there,” she said. "I don’t contest his right to stop us parking there, but to block us in is spiteful. It would be better to block us out.”

But Adrian Grainger, area manager for Veena Leisure, the company that owns the pub, said that the dispute was caused by a misunderstanding.

“We’re quite happy for parents to use our car park,” he said. “But we do ask them to avoid a raised area where delivery vehicles park.”

He added: “I am not aware of any deliberate attempt to block people in.”
