A YOUNG girl knocked down on her way to school is now in a stable condition after major surgery.

The 11-year-old and two other girls, all thought to be pupils at Bishop Justus Church of England School, were in an accident involving a pick-up truck in Bromley during Monday morning's rush.

She is now described as being comfortable after surgery when she was taken to King's College Hospital with a leg fracture and a loss of blood.

Another 11-year-old with a head injury and a 12-year-old with minor injuries were taken to the Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough, after the incident at about 7.50am.

They were standing on the pavement behind pedestrian crossing railings on the A21 Bromley Common, at the junction with Turpington Road, when the incident happened.

A white Toyota pick-up truck was travelling towards Bromley town centre when it hit the railings where the girls were standing.

Three ambulances were called, one of which was hit by a bus before a cordon was thrown round the area.

It caused traffic chaos across the borough, with Bromley Common remaining closed in both directions for most of Monday morning. Police traffic officers scoured the area.
