SPECIAL policing cabins could soon be set up in schools in Kent. It is hoped neighbourhood policing partnerships can be forged right across the county.

A portable cabin is today being set up in the grounds of Newington Junior Foundation School at Ramsgate. Kent's Chief Constable Mike Fuller will officially open the office.

The idea is the brainchild of retired head teacher Alan Roochove. Police say it forge a strong link with the area and a "unique" community partnership.

Acting head teacher Penny Fuller said it was good for the children to have police officers nearby "to look up to".

She stressed: "It is an opportunity for people on the estate because we are so central and easy to find. This is an example of the community working side by side with the police."

Police in Thanet police will use the cabin as a Newington base for two officers, PCs Chris Wiltshire and Steve Moat who will be at today's opening ceremony.

The base will also be used by representatives from the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, including Thanet council wardens. The cabin was paid for by the police and the school.

Mr Fuller said: "We, as the police, can't make the community a better place by ourselves. This is a fantastic example of the community working side by side with the police."

PC Chris Wiltshire spoke to KM-fm about the initiative...
