An organisation which works to reunite missing people with their loved ones is appealing for more members.

Kent Search and Rescue (KSAR) was founded in Thanet 10 years ago.

It provides invaluable backup to the police when hunting for vulnerable missing people in life-threatening situations.

It is part of the Association of Lowland Search and Rescue and works closely with the emergency services to reduce the pressures on their manpower resources.

KSAR’s aim is to alleviate the suffering and distress to the missing person and their families.

Membership secretary Russ Hodgins said: “When someone goes missing, the family goes through the most traumatic time. The sense of relief when the family and a missing person are reunited is absolutely fantastic.

“I have only been present for this once, but if almost brought tears to my eyes.”

Members are highly trained in specialist search techniques including night searching.

In 2007, KSAR was called out to 36 missing people across the county and volunteered a total of 1,178 hours to search.

To mark its 10th anniversary, KSAR members held a recruitment and information day at Westwood Cross, Broadstairs.

Donations totalling £220 were gathered and members were joined by Bentley, one of three highly trained search dogs that works with KSAR.

Potential members can contact Mr Hodgins on 01843 832995.
