WHEN some Kent students took part in a mock election to learn about democracy they turned to two experienced political campaigners for advice and information.
North Thanet MP Roger Gale, who is one of the longest serving politicians in the south east, and former Margate mayor and district councillor Mick Tomlinson helped observe the hustings at Margate's Hartsdown Technology College.
Cllr Tomlinson was on hand when principal Andy Somers declared the outcome following an online vote.
Four candidates from Year 8 had campaigned enthusiastically and produced party literature posters, visited tutor groups seeking votes, and made a promotional DVD that was shown at assemblies.
The winner was Green Labour candidate Bang Thi Hoang who campaigned for pay-as-you-go lockers, a fleece instead of a blazer, reductions in campus foods and drink prices, and more recycling and sports equipment.
Beaten candidates were Green Conservative Kerry Boyd, Tom Christian from the Freedom Party, and Lewis Colley from the Name Not Necessary Party.
