A NAVAL memorial at Chatham Historic Dockyard will be unveiled by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust confirmed Medway's second Royal visit of the year earlier today.

Prince Phillip will be the guest of honour at the dedication ceremony of the National Destroyer Memorial at The Historic Dockyard Chatham taking place from 11am on Wednesday November 14. It will follow a visit by The Queen to the Royal Engineers Museum in Brompton.

The Duke will unveil a specially commissioned monument alongside HMS Cavalier, the officially designated memorial to the 142 Royal Navy destroyers sunk during the Second World War and over 11,000 men who lost their lives as a result.

HMS Cavalier was the Royal Navy’s last operational Second World War Destroyer and is now preserved at The Historic Dockyard Chatham.

Admiral Sir Ian Garnett, Chairman of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, said “The trustees are honoured and delighted that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh has agreed to attend this ceremony and to unveil this unique and fitting monument.”
