A Primark Winnie the Pooh plate which contains traces of lead and formaldehyde poses a "serious risk" to children.

The discount retailer has issued a recall after tests revealed it contains dangerous levels of chemicals.

It issued a statement saying that trace levels of lead and formaldehyde had been discovered at levels higher than permitted.

It is feared the chemicals found in the plate – which is primarily made of bamboo – could be hazardous if ingested.

This could occur through food on the plate, or if a baby or child puts the plate in their mouth.

A Primark statement said the plate "does not meet the Primark usual high standards for safety".

"The product has been found to release trace amounts of Lead and Formaldehyde at levels higher than EU regulation permitted levels, and this may present a risk if ingested.

"The product has been on sale in our stores in the UK from January 13, 2022.

"With the safety of our customers at the forefront of our minds, we are conducting a voluntary recall and invite you to return this product to any Primark store for a full refund.

"You will not be required to provide proof of purchase or a receipt in order to receive a refund."
