There may be more than 70 years between them, but school soccer ace Jack Paine and former footballer Charlie Lincoln, 86, share more than a love of the game.

Jack, 14, plays for Hereson school and Ramsgate FC - just as Charlie did when he was a boy all those years ago.

They both agree that the best way to play soccer is with passing flair and skill, not hoofing the ball over the top of defences towards the goal.

And they will both be helping Hereson school celebrate its 100th birthday this year.

Charlie's story forms part of an anniversary being put together by archivist Vic Todd.

Charlie, from Ramsgate, who was selected to play soccer for Kent, said: "We had a cracking little team at Hereson school and at Ramsgate.

"We played stylish football, a little like the Arsenal team of today, all flowing moves and clever passes.

"I loved my soccer and used to keep fit by running from Ramsgate to Minster and back."

Mr Todd added: "Charlie’s story is part of the big jigsaw puzzle we are putting together using artefacts, memorabilia and stories to get a real feel for how Hereson developed over the last century."
