Barrie ‘Swampy’ Ridley from Queenborough beat 80,000 people to make it onto Channel 4’s hit show Shipwrecked as part of the Shark tribe. In this weekly column, he shares his experiences with EMMA GROVE
Sunday's Shipwrecked had a twist when it came to choosing the new arrivals.
Jamie and Adelina had spent equal time with the Sharks and the Tigers, and although Jamie was a Shark, Adelina was undecided.
When they both arrived back on Shark island for the beach party, Shark Tom took Adelina aside for a chat, and assured her the Sharks would be choosing her, should they pick their tribe.
Barrie revealed Tom had a bit of a thing for Adelina, but she wasn’t the only Shark that got his attention.
He said: “Every new girl we get Tom takes them away for a chat – which puts a lot of girls off him.”
After Jamie and Adelina announced they had chosen Sharks, there was a long debate to see who the Sharks would keep.
A group vote showed Adelina would stay and just when they were about to announce this, Shark Lauren called them back and said they should keep Jamie, as he has more character.
Another vote followed, and in a complete turn around, Jamie was made an official Shark.
Barrie said: “I stood my ground because I wanted Adelina – Jamie has got a cracking personality, but the thing that put me off him was that new arrivals might not ‘get’ him and his arrogance.
“What Tom said to Adelina was that we really like her and it’s looking good, and anyone who heard that would think they are going to get chosen.”
Barrie also us told there was an argument between him and Lara against Danny that wasn’t shown.
Lara and Barrie said if Adelina came to Sharks just because of Tom, and nothing happened the first thing she will do is nominate to Tigers – but Danny didn’t think this would happen.
One teaser for next week is that following a pontoon race, where one member from each tribe has to race to the middle of the lagoon to win a prize, someone commits a rule break.
This results in the Sharks having to give up the prize they won from the race to the Tigers.
The end of Sunday’s episode saw new arrivals Beau and Josh turning up.
Barrie said: “Beau is really laid back and chilled, but is sometimes bordering on arrogant as well.
“It takes a while to get to know him but he did keep his cards close to his chest – he just sat back and observed more than getting involved.
“Josh is absolutely hilarious, one of the funniest people I have ever met. He’s really eccentric and really quick-witted but it can get annoying sometimes.”
Barrie said it’s not a win for the Sharks and there’s controversy surrounding the Tigers choice of new arrival.
Tactics seem to come into play again, and although it seems they all prefer Essex lad Beau, they decide to pick Josh as they think he will appeal more to new arrivals.
The biggest shock Barrie tells us about involves some of the Tiger girls who feel bullied by the laddish mentality on the island.
He said: “Carly and Vicky actually told us one week they wanted to nominate to Sharks because they feel bullied by the Tiger lads.
“But the week they are thinking of nominating, Carly actually gets taken ill, and Vicky doesn’t want to do it on her own.”
Stay tuned to see if Tiger original Carly, and Vicky do become Sharks.
