TWO armed robbers today threatened a postman to get into a sub-post office in Southborough, near Tunbridge Wells.

The men used what is thought to have been a shotgun to force the postman to persuade staff inside rooms at the rear of the shop to open a locked door.

The raiders then grabbed cash before fleeing on foot, splitting to run off in opposite directions. The raid happened just before between 8am and 8.40am. No one was hurt.

Police were quickly on the scene and sealed off the area as they began to question possible witnesses. They also began searching surrounding streets for signs of the robbers.

Det Constable Richard Pringle, of West Kent CID, said: "Fortunately no one was hurt during the robbery, but obviously it was a very distressing experience for the staff.

"We are hoping that with the amount of traffic on the A26 at that time of the morning as people made their way to work or school someone may have seewn one or both of the men."

Both were white. One looked to be in his 30s, wearing a dark threequarter length coat. His accomplice was wearing a dark baseball cap, and both had their faces covered.

Traffic using the A26 London Road between Tunbridge and Tunbridge Wells was delayed for a time as it was forced to single file past the post office, close to a pelican crossing.

The post office is now the only one in Southborough after another, further along the same road at The Parade, closed recently as part of a national restructuring programme.
