Simeon Jackson insisted he was just doing his job after he bagged a treble on Saturday to put Swindon out of sight.
The striker, pictured, scored his first hat-trick for Gillingham and his first since September 2006 when he managed the feat twice in four days for Rushden.
"It’s what I’m here to do, I’m here to get goals and I’m just trying to do that," he said.
"It’s a good feeling and as a striker it’s what you want to do, you want goals."
He added: "It’s good to get it done on the first day and back it up with a good performance from the whole team. Hopefully, we can keep that going."
Despite the 5-0 win Jackson knows there is plenty more work to be done.
"It’s only one game and it’s good to get the first one out of the way and we can kick on for Tuesday now," he said. "If we can get some consistency and if we can keep this going at home it would be magnificent."
The hat-trick has inflated Jackson’s reputation but he remains focused on his job at Priestfield.
He said: "I’m not looking or thinking about anything else. I just want to play and get goals for the club."
