Bromley 2 Gillingham 3
Simeon Jackson scored on his return to the Gillingham side at Bromley on Tuesday but another injury marred the night.
Simon King (pictured) was stretchered off after an hour’s play to add to an ever-growing injury list for Gillingham manager Mark Stimson.
King missed the start of pre-season through injury and could well be sidelined again following Tuesday night’s match.
The night had started well for Stimson’s side, thanks to Jackson’s early goal, but Bromley equalised from the penalty spot in the second half shortly after King went off injured.
Luis Cumbers’ goal put Gillingham back in-front after 80 minutes, lively substitute Marcus Cassius made it 2-2 with six minutes left, but the visitors had the last word when Mark Bentley scored in injury time.
Jackson was in the Gills’ line-up for the first time since the end of last season and the striker took just 22 minutes to register his name on the scoresheet.
Last season’s top scorer has only recently returned from America after playing for Canada in the Gold Cup.
He opened the scoring at Hayes Lane with a low shot from distance, which just crept in past the home keeper, after a mistake from Bromley’s Mark Corneille had put him within sight of goal.
A strong Gillingham line-up saw Andy Barcham and Chris Palmer start the game either side of Jackson, while in midfield Mark Bentley joined Curtis Weston and Kevin Maher in the starting eleven.
Travelling with the squad was Adam Miller, who was on the pitch warming up before kick-off, having shaken off the worst of an ankle ligament problem. He, along with Stuart Lewis (ankle), Dennis Oli (knee) and Andy Pugh (groin) were already on the injury list.
Bromley came close to scoring themselves on a couple of occasions in the first half. Their best chance fell to Luke I’Anson, after Gareth Williams had threaded a ball through Gillingham’s defence, but his powerful shot was turned away in style by Alan Julian.
Chris Palmer put a powerful shot wide early in the second half but King’s injury and a host of substitutions disrupted play.
Bromley levelled the scores from the spot on 76 minutes when John Nutter brought Aron Fray down in the box and former Gills youngster Ashley Carew scored from the spot.
The Gills were back ahead just minutes later though when Cumbers netted, following a mistake from Bromley’s keeper Gareth I Williams, but that lead lasted just six minutes as Cassius fired into the roof of the net.
With four minutes of injury time gone Luke Rooney burst into the box and Bentley struck home. The linesman originally ruled out the goal for off-side before referee Ian Crouch overruled the decision and handed Gillingham a win.
