Simeon Jackson celebrates scoring the winner at Wembley Picture: Matthew Walker
by Luke Cawdell
Simeon Jackson had little time to celebrate his promotion-winning goal on Saturday after his country came calling.
Jackson’s last-minute winner sent the Gills into League 1, but the 21-goal striker must now turn his attentions to the international scene.
Canada play a friendly match in Cyprus on Thursday and Jackson, who has yet to make an international appearance, said: "I’ve got a couple more days of training and a game left before the end of the season for me – I just have to keep going."
The Gills striker flies out to Cyprus on Monday as he looks to make a late bid for a place in this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.
It would cap an incredible season for the 22-year-old, who earned a place in the Gillingham history books on Saturday.
Speaking about that winning goal, he said: "I can’t even explain it in words. It’s one of the most important goals I’ve scored in my career and for the team to get promoted on the back of a relegation is the best.
"We deserved a goal. The keeper did very well for them and pulled off some good saves. To get one in the last minute sealed the deal.
"The goalscorer gets all the praise but it’s down to the team. We kept the clean sheet and got the winning goal at Wembley so we’re all buzzing.
"It doesn’t matter how many goals you score personally, if you don’t get promoted it doesn’t matter."
