These loveable kittens were stuffed into a cardboard box and dumped by a river.

The six cats were found by a lady out walking near the River Stour at Kingsmead in Cantebury.

She took them home with her for an evening before handing them to the Barton Veterinary Hospital at New Dover Road.

Staff there have been treating the kittens, who were malnourished and may have been suffering with cat flu.

The hospital and the Canterbury Cat Society are now looking to find them all homes.

But trainee veterinary nurse Sophie Harris says the abandoned kittens are part of a worrying trend around the district.

She said: "People are buying cats and then not worrying about having them neutered and so they can fall pregnant.

"Then when the kittens are born they don't want them and end up doing things like dumping them. It's very unfortunate.

"We have been looking these particular kittens and they are healthy now even they had a bit of cat flu."

The hospital is trying to find the kittens a home and works closely with organisations such as the Canterbury Cat Society.

Canterbury Cat Society is an independent charity and relies on donations and fund-raising.
