A PLAN for the county’s 620-plus schools move to a six-term year could be put on hold, it has been revealed.

Kent County Council could now adopt a “wait and see” policy amid concerns that going it alone while schools in neighbouring authorities stick with the three term year could cause confusion.

Instead, education chiefs are understood to have recommended that KCC should discuss with neighbouring education authorities whether there is the option of several councils moving to a six-term year at the same time.

The county council consulted with schools, parents and teachers in the summer over the idea. It is understood councillors are concerned Kent could be left out on a limb and there may be confusion and opposition among parents if nearby councils stick to the traditional three-term year.

A report on the outcome of the consultation is being presented to KCC’s ruling Conservative cabinet this week. A number of education authorities which border Kent are also consulting on changing the school year, including Medway, East Sussex and Bexley.
