The Spaceback, which is 180mm shorter and smaller of boot than the ‘notchback’ Rapid, is designed to be the brand’s long-awaited direct rival to the likes of the Ford Focus and Kia Cee’d.

It will start from £14,340 on the road for the 1.2 TSI petrol S model with 85bhp. There is a non-turbocharged MPI petrol engine but it won’t come to the UK.

The most popular models are likely to be the 1.2 TSI 104bhp SE, which retails at a tempting £16,180, and the 1.6 TDI CR 104bhp SE, at a not-so-tempting £17,930. Both models sit in road tax band C.

The most expensive manual model will be the 1.6 diesel TDI CR 104bhp Elegance GreenTech, at £18,640. It is eclipsed in price by the 1.6 TDI CR 89bhp Elegance DSG, which thanks to its twin-clutch automatic gearbox costs £18,900.

Prices for the Yeti have also been announced, and will start from £16,600 on the road for the turbocharged 1.2-litre TSI petrol with 104bhp.

Moving up the range, prices will ultimately rise to £27,050 for the range-topping Yeti Outdoor L&K 2.0 TDI 138bhp 4x4 DSG.

The mid-range Yeti SE with the popular 1.6 TDI 104bhp diesel engine will cost £19,605 to take out of the showroom, while the same trim grade with a 104bhp petrol engine will cost £1,495 less.

Both models are available to order, although deliveries will not commence for a number of weeks.
