Police are hunting a thief who smashed an off-licence shop window and ran off with the till.

The raid happened at the Railway off-licence, in Railway Street, Chatham, just after 4.30pm on Thursday.

The thief smashed the front window, grabbed the till from the counter and then ran off in the direction of New Road.

Police sealed off the front of the shop and sent in forensic officers to dust the remains of the window for clues.

It is not known how much money was in the till, but it is not thought to have been a large amount.

The till was later recovered, empty, near the scene.

Det Sgt Jayne Thomas said:“We were called by the shopkeeper at about 4.35pm and officers are due to look through CCTV images to see if they can identify the man.

"His is white and is thought to have ran away in the direction of New Road.

"No arrests have been made at this stage.

“We would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or can help us with enquiries to contact us a soon as possible.
