Smash-and-grab raid witnesses sought

TWO people who may have information about a smash-and-grab raid are being sought by police. A motorcycle shop in Northdown Road, Cliftonville, near Margate, was burgled in the early hours of Sunday December 2. A number of petrol-driven mini scooters, worth £250 each, were taken from a window display at Andrews World of Scooters.

Since the crime was reported in the Thanet Extra on December 7, two people have contacted the owner, Graham McKenzie, with information. The first was a taxi driver who says he saw some people acting suspiciously outside the shop at around 2am on the night of the raid. He saw them run away and into a nearby alleyway. This was later searched but nothing was found.

Another witness says he saw a man carrying one of the scooters past the Lido in Cliff Terrace later that evening. Police want both witnesses to come forward and give as much information as they can.

Mr McKenzie said: ”The scooters are quite unusual and we are the only stockists this side of Maidstone. It is strange this man had one on the day ours went missing although, of course, it may be a coincidence.

“If any of these people wish to remain anonymous, that’s fine, but I am offering a £250 reward for information leading to prosecution.”

Mr McKenzie sells the scooters with receipts containing specific security information. He said: ”If anyone is offered one of these for sale privately they should ask to see the receipt. If it hasn’t got one, or it is not an original, they should contact the police."
