FORMER Gillingham captain Paul Smith has returned to the club on loan.

The 34-year-old left the club in the summer after turning down the offer of a new contract on reduced wages.

He joined Walsall and has made nine appearances for Paul Merson's side this season.

Smith, who has made 393 appearances for the Gills, trained with his team-mates on Friday and is likely to go straight into the squad to face Blackpool on Saturday.
