Snow problems easing in Kent

Compacted ice on untreated side roads was the biggest problem for people trying to get around in south and east Kent today.

But in Folkestone the heavier snowfall of up to six inches and more in places was still creating headaches for motorists and pedestrians.

It was a totally different proposition yesterday when roads were jammed.

The picture above shows jams at the entrance to the Channel Tunnel as traffic queued to get in on Thursday.

Services were suspended temporarily to allow terminal roads to be cleared of snow and ice.

Operation Stack was brought in on the M20 to help clear the backlog. It was lifted at 3am Friday.

Kent County Council say there is enough salt to grit the roads despite the heavy snowfall last month.

Public transport is still being affected - with delays on the Eurotunnel and Southeastern trains.

The Met Office said no more significant snowfalls are expected - but the thaw could take several days.
