Kent commuters suffered delays on trains to London today - because of leaves on the line.

Southeastern said services between Tonbridge and London Bridge have been held up by around 40 minutes since this morning.

The "poor rail conditions" have been caused by a combination of leaves, light drizzle and wind.

A Southeastern spokesman said: "The leaves and drizzle create a think layer of mulch on the track, which makes conditions difficult for the trains - it's like a car trying to drive on black ice.

"The trains struggle to get traction and it takes them longer to arrive at and leave stations.

"Our trains are fitted with equipment to blast sand onto the track to help improve traction.

"An awful lot of leaves have fallen in the past couple of days, but we're hoping the delays won't last very long."
