A Kent aircraft company has revealed its plans to celebrate the birthday of a war veteran who raised millions of pounds for the NHS during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar hopes to fly an original Spitfire, named 'Spirit of Kent,' over Captain Tom Moore's house in Bedfordshire on his 100th birthday.
The 99-year-old Second World War veteran has struck a chord across the world as he raised more than £18 million in donations by walking 100 laps of his garden.
All the money donated will be going to the NHS in the fight again Covid-19.
Originally he had hoped to reach the goal of £1,000 through his Just Giving page, but news of his fundraising spread across the UK, prompting thousands of people to donate to the cause.
Now, in honour of his success and forthcoming birthday on April 30, the aircraft hangar want to do something special for Capt Moore.
A spokesman from Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar said: "Tom represents the true spirit of Britain just as the Spitfire did during those dark days of 1940.
"To bring them together at this present difficult time would show the rest of the world that Britain is still worthy of the word 'great.'"
The company understand that the current lockdown means the plan could require a lot of input and permission from the relevant authorities, but hope they are able to get everything organised in time for his birthday.
The veteran recently revealed the love of his life originally came from Gravesend, who he met after the war had ended.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Capt Moore said: "As it so happened, the office manager in Gravesend was a rather attractive young lady - she looked terrific to me, like a model - so I had to do various trips and, shall we say, the attraction with the office manager became stronger and I eventually married her."
Now living near Milton Keynes, Capt Moore completed his 1,000 laps but will keep going as long as the donations come in.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, he said: "It just shows that there there are such generous thoughtful people throughout the country.
He has also received dozens of messages of support from celebrities, sports stars, actors and politicians including England cricketer Ben Stokes, singer Jason Donovan, golfer Ian Poulter and actress Bonnie Langford.
A campaign has even been launched for Capt Moore to receive a knighthood from The Queen.
