A blast ripped through a Gravesend home, shattering windows and causing other "extensive damage".

Fire crews were called to the two-bedroom, mid-terraced home in Kilndown at about 7.10pm last night following a 999 call from its owner.

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a can of spray adhesive, which had leaked in and under a kitchen unit, filling the house with vapour which then ignited when the gas cooker was turned on.

Firefighter Liam Hudson said: "The explosion blew out the double glazed windows on the ground floor, as well as causing extensive damage to the rest of the house."

A man in his 40s, who was in the house at the time, was treated for shock by ambulance crews but was uninjured.

The incident has prompted Kent Fire and Rescue Service to warn residents to take care when using and storing extremely flammable adhesives.

Flammable liquids can give off large volumes of vapours at room temperature, it says, which can ignite violently when mixed with air.

Anyone using them should store them in safety containers in separate storage areas, and use them in a safe place with good ventilation.
