A grieving mother choked back tears of disbelief on hearing that a man who viciously stabbed her son to death seven years ago had been let off with an eight month jail sentence for robbery.
Wendy Comins, 59, mother of Whitstable Rugby Club player Troy Comins, 26, who Steven Fields killed in 2001, reacted in horror and disbelief and the sentence.
She said: "This latest decision beggars belief. He stabbed my son, I have been given a life sentence. And this creature is still going round. There just isn’t any justice."
Fields robbed a betting shop and threatened to stab the cashier just days after being released from prison for affray. The judge refused to impose an indeterminate sentence on Fields because he did not consider he was sufficient danger to the public.
But Mrs Comins said: "What does he have to do to convince people he is a danger to the public?"
