Stefan Payne scored twice for a Gillingham XI in a 3-0 win over Kent County League side Canterbury City on Tuesday night.

A strong Gillingham team was named for the match which took place at Herne Bay’s Winch’s Field stadium.

Among the team named by manager Andy Hessenthaler were Simon King, Luke Rooney, Tony Sinclair, Danny Jackman and striker Payne.

A crowd of just under 300 were in attendance to see the fixture.

Canterbury’s task was hindered by the absence of their main striking options, with neither Michael Smisson, Renford Tenyue or Royston Gough in the side.

Payne, who featured for the Gills in their League 2 match at Lincoln on Saturday, put the visitors infront with just six minutes on the clock.

A weak clearance from Canterbury goalkeeper Giga Zulmalusheili put the Gills in on goal and Payne was on hand to rifle home the opener.

Macauley Murray lobbed an effort over for Canterbury and at the other end Zulmalusheili saved well to deny Payne’s strike partner Andy White.

Just before the break the Gills grabbed a second, through Payne, and a third goal in the second half by trialist Paco Craig completed the scoring.

Craig, an 18-year-old from West Ham’s academy team, played most of the match at centre-back before being replaced late on by Callum Davies.
