Pop-rock’s nice guys McFly headline the second day of the Music on the Hill festival in aid of Demelza House. Chris Price caught up with the boy band who have come of age.
McFly fans heading to Music on the Hill can be excused for feeling they know the band better than they know themselves.
Every Wednesday night at 10pm fans have curled up on the sofa with their cup of cocoa to watch the boys in their Channel 5 reality show, McFly on the Wall. The programme followed them on their Above the Noise tour and showed why, unlike many boy bands, they are still going strong after eight years together.
Although in passing they revealed the show is not exactly warts and all, it is clear that guitarist and vocalists Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones, bassist Dougie Poynter and drummer Harry Judd feel at home with each other.
“We have not taken any advice off anyone about how to behave,” said Harry, 25. “We have just tried to be ourselves.
“Making the TV show was the same as always to be honest. It wasn’t too obtrusive and we could pick and choose what people saw.
“It is always a cringe moment when you see yourself on TV. I don’t mind watching myself playing drums but watching myself being interviewed is cringe.
“Hopefully people have liked the show. It has been interesting to watch. We were so busy over the past few months we had forgotten what was filmed so we looked forward to it when it came on TV.”
Although the band’s last album Above the Noise peaked at a disappointing No20 in the album charts, the band who have chalked up an incredible seven No1s, have not been disheartened about writing new material. They write continuously while on the road.
Harry said: “We want to get in the studio to record new material but nothing will be ready in time for Music on the Hill. We still have a relatively new album to play.
“Also we like to entertain so we don’t want to play songs people have not heard before.
“Making an album is my favourite thing and the most enjoyable time is when you hear songs back for the first time.
“We have had some high-quality albums, not just singles, and that is how we have kept fans into the music.
“I enjoy touring but making the album is really good.”
