Hundreds of bales of straw are being allowed to burn out after fire broke out in a stack at Kemsing last night.

Firefighters remain at the scene this morning controlling the blaze at West End, Kemsing. The road between Childsbridge Lane and St Edith's Road has been closed because visibility has been severely restricted by smoke.

The alarm was raised before 8pm last night when 500 bales of straw, approximately 300 tonnes, were reported to be alight.

Fire crews used a jet, hosereel and hydrant to pour water onto the flames, and just after 11pm they brought in a Bobcat to dismantle the stack so the straw could be spread out.

Two fire appliances and their crews remain at the scene.
