Cody McDonald believes the leading League 2 clubs are feeling the pressure at the top and he is backing Gillingham to take full advantage.

The Gills were the only team in the top seven to win at the weekend, having overcome Accrington 3-1 at Priestfield, and that boosted their chances of clinching an automatic promotion spot.

McDonald (pictured after scoring), who took his goal tally to 19 on Saturday, said: "The teams at the top will feel the pressure because they are going to be looking over their shoulder.

"With us winning we’ve put them under pressure again but we can’t take our foot off the gas.

"The boys are still confident we can get automatic promotion. If you don’t believe that then there is no real point going out and trying. We are confident we can get that third place and I think we will.

The Gills extended their unbeaten run to 11 games at the weekend and have lost just two in their previous 21 outings.

"It’s a good record and if we can stay unbeaten until the end of the season we will be right up there," said the on-loan Norwich striker.

"It’s a brilliant record to have but come the end of the season if we don’t get promoted people won’t remember little runs like that. It’s important we step on from that and put this club in League 1."
