TWO students arrested for drug offences during a police raid on their flat have been given cautions for possessing herbal cannabis, a class C drug.

Police swooped on the flat in the Northwood Court Halls of Residence of Canterbury Christ Church University’s Broadstairs campus at about 7am on Tuesday. One of the students is aged 19 and the other 20.

A passive drugs dog was used during the search as well as an ION-Track machine, which can detect drug residue on surfaces.

Police began investigating the occupants of the flat after receiving information from Canterbury Christ Church University about potential drug activity among some of its students.

The university fully supported the police investigation, providing officers with information and access to the halls of residence.

PC Jerry Choo, the drugs liaison officer for Thanet, said the university’s tough stance on drugs showed it was serious about the welfare of its students.

He stressed: “Canterbury Christ Church University should be commended for taking drugs issues so seriously. It is a well-known fact that drugs can destroy people’s lives, leading to a life of addiction, crime and even early death.

“However, the university came to us immediately after they suspected two of their students were involved in drugs and asked for our help to deal with the matter.

“Kent Police and the university will continue to monitor the campus for any other drug issues, while also bringing in other agencies, such as the Kent Council on Addiction, to support the university staff and students.”
