A survey conducted by the Co-Operative Motor Group has discovered that we're a dishonest bunch of drivers, and we'd treat friends and family no differently from a complete stranger.

Just 24% of motorists would tell a friend if they bumped their car on the street where they live, only 26% would own up if they hit a neighbour's vehicle, while only one in eight would let a stranger know after a minor prang.

Honesty amongst motorists appeared to improve with age, with 72% of drivers aged over 55 claiming they would try to locate the vehicle's owner regardless of who they were. This compared with a figure of about 40% for motorists aged between 18 and 24.

Londoners appeared worst at owning up, with as many as 22% not telling anyone if they had an on-street accident. The most honest drivers were in north-west England, where only 10.82% would fail to inform.
