A POLICE investigation has begun into reports that up to 20 birds, including protected swans, have been captured and killed.

Reports suggest the birds are being lured from Southmere Lake, Thamesmead, and captured in nets, before being killed. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Bexley wildlife crime officer PC John Horton, who is leading the investigation, said: "Suspects have been seen around Southmere Lake luring the swans with bread, netting them, killing them and removing them from the lake in black binbags."

Anyone who chooses to kill, injure, take, sell or be in possession of a protected bird, faces a fine of up to £5,000, or six months in prison.

It is also an offence to damage, remove or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built.

PC Horton added: "The problem is that some people are unaware that this kind of behaviour is against the law."

There have also been reports of ducks and geese being taken from parks.

A council spokesman said: "We have had no reports from our staff, from the ever-vigilant Friends of the Parks, or from members of the public, of wildlife being taken from the council's lakes."
