Tackle drugs now, police urged

Druhs are now people's number one concern

Illegal drugs are the number one concern for shoppers in Canterbury.

Bargain hunters at the Whitefriars shopping centre were quizzed about their most important anti-social behaviour concerns.

The Kent Police Authority research came at the start of a county-wide road show.

Balls filling five separate tubes were used to show which of the five options available were the most concerning.

As well as the top choice, other options were teenagers hanging around, rubbish or litter lying around, vandalism, graffiti or deliberate damage and people drunk or rowdy in public.

KPA chairman Ann Barnes was delighted to see lots of responses: "Policing and crime is of interest to everybody.

"It’s in everyone’s interest to get the best policing service and our job is to find out what people want from their service."

She added a similar event last year had encouraged them to take to the town centres again.

"We asked people what they thought our top policing priority should be and it was undoubtedly anti-social behaviour.

"This year, we’re doing exactly the same thing, but we’re actually digging deeper into specific issues."

Once the roadshow is finished, the results will be fed into the KPA’s database and will go into their policing plan for the next financial year.

More immediately, from this September, neighbourhood task teams will target specific quality of life issues.

Protecting vulnerable people will be one hurdle to jump in the short term, but any future expansion will most likely depend on budgets for next financial year.
