The research - carried out for IMRG, an industry body for global e-retail - found 77 per cent of shoppers are planning to do at least half of their Christmas shopping online.

The number is up by almost a fifth on last year.

One of the reasons for the switch is the bargains available online - the survey found that 79 per cent of shoppers were satisfied with the competitive prices available.
