Twenty nine per cent believed IVF should be offered to everyone regardless of lifestyle.

The survey was carried out by the British Fertility Society, the Science Media Centre and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.

The findings come after experts called for obese patients to lose weight in order to be entitled to IVF treatment.

It is estimated that three million IVF babies have been born and each year in the UK around 32,000 people undergo fertility treatment.
