A teenager has died after two cars collided on the A2 in Rainham last night.

The emergency services were called out at about 8.10pm after a Citroen and a Peugeot crashed into each other close to the junction with Seymour Road.

The incident caused major delays for drivers in the area as firefighters, police and paramedics dealt with the incident.

The woman who is 19, and from the Sittingbourne area, was a passenger in the Peugeot but despite being given emergency treatment at the scene, she died in hospital in the early hours of this morning.

The accident closed both lanes of the A2 London Road for hours as the wreckage from the cars was strewn across the carriageways in both directions.

The drivers of both vehicles involved are believed to have suffered only minor injuries in the collision.

It is thought the cars were travelling in opposite directions and the impact was head on.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "We assisted paramedics get the injured woman out of the car and made sure the accident scene was safe.

"We spent about 45 minutes at the scene and the accident caused major delays for motorists in both directions as the road had to be closed for some time."

It is believed that a dark coloured Vauxhall estate was present at the time the incident occurred.

Roads in the area were closed while officers dealt with the collision and reopened at 2.30am.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, particularly the driver of the Vauxhall estate, or has information which may assist officers with their investigation.
