A Margate man whose flat was damaged in a dramatic blaze firefighters are calling a "near tragedy" has spoken of his shock and devastation.

Glenn Stevens was out when the fire started in Athelstan Road, Cliftonville, at around 10.50pm Thursday.

Margate's Blue Watch team arrived within two minutes of a 999 emergency call and helped rescue 10 people, including a child, from the burning property.

The hallway of the property has been gutted and Mr Stevens said several flats had also suffered smoke damage.

He added: "I've spoken to my landlord and unfortunately we'll have to move out because the situation is so bad.

"We can't get inside the building now but it's been devastated. It's unliveable inside."

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said a young girl was taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation and several other occupants were given oxygen at the scene.

A spokesperson confirmed the cause of the incident is under investigation.
