Fishermen in Thanet were given the green light today to go back out to sea - following lengthy negotiations to get extra quotas.

Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon has agreed to extend the additional quota in the North Sea.

It follows a long campaign by local fishermen - which has been supported by local MPs.

John Nichols, chairman of the Thanet Fisherman's Association, welcomed the decision.

He said: "We've had vessels in which have been tied up in Ramsgate's harbour since July 4.

"It has now given us a chance to get back to sea and opened up the fishery.

"In terms of reality, it isn't a great amount of quota that has been given to us but it will let us go back to sea only for two or three days a month.

"This will let us earn the expenses of the vessels and so the fisherman won't be dipping into their reserve funds for harbour dues, insurance and maintenance bills.

"It has been a very long campaign and without our local MPs we would still be tied up in port."

South Thanet MP Laura Sandys said: "I am thrilled that our Thanet fishermen are now able to go back to sea following lengthy negotiations.

"It has been a difficult few months for our local fishermen but today they have the green light to get back on their boats.

"Ever since the Minister, when in opposition, came down to Ramsgate at my invitation, he has seen the importance of our fishermen to our community, and he has been working to ensure that we get the best deal for them.

"Today shows how true his promise was to them when he said that he was committed to a future for our local fishing industry."

MPs Roger Gale and Julian Brazier also supported the campaign.
