The controversial park and ride scheme for Thanington has been scrapped, according to council Lib Dem group leader Alex Perkins.

He says the council should come clean about the contents of a report which saves the recreation ground from the bulldozers.

Clllr Perkins said the news had been due to be announced at a meeting of the Wincheap Working Group scheduled for this month.

But the meeting was cancelled and would now not take place until the New Year.

“In the interests of giving everyone in Thanington the happy Christmas they deserve, I want the council to come clean right now about the contents of the consultants’ report and what council officers are now recommending,” said Cllr Perkins.

“We know that the Thanington scheme has been confined to the scrap-heap where it has always belonged.”

Council spokesman Rob Davies said it was too early for the authority to be drawn on the status of the proposed park and ride.
