What makes the perfect proposal? The setting? The atmosphere? The way you ask? We’ve covered some beautiful declarations of love over the years, and to celebrate Valentine’s Day, here are five of our favourites.
Love was literally in the air over Medway when a photographer spotted a plane towing a simple, heartfelt message: “Berta I love u will u marry me.”
The banner was the work of Ozzie Goztas, 25, who proposed to his girlfriend of two years, Berta Sarikay, 19.
He said: “I did it on her 19th birthday and I thought this would be a great way to propose.”
Berta, who was at Lakeside shopping centre, said: “I knew nothing about it. He wouldn’t even tell me where he was taking me. It was a complete surprise. When I first saw the message I was in tears and was in shock for half an hour. I said yes, of course.”
Christmas came early for Fiona Robertson from Tonbridge when she visited Santa’s Grotto and unwrapped a diamond engagement ring.
The romantic, and festive, gesture was planned by boyfriend Graham Jones, who got down on one knee in the grotto at The Mall Chequers in Maidstone.
In front of Father Christmas, and the couple’s children, the bride-to-be said yes.
Fiona said: “Graham is romantic and buys me flowers and takes me to nice places. He asked me to marry him in Santa’s Grotto because he knows I love this time of the year and everything about Christmas, especially spending it with family and friends - the people you love.”
A spur of the moment decision made Ben Hatcher Maria Calderon’s hero after he proposed at an Enrique Iglesias concert.
Romantic Ben presented the engagement ring on stage at the 02 arena in London in front of 20,000 cheering Enrique fans.
And luckily for him, Maria said yes.
Ben, 32, of Swaine Road, St Michael’s said: “I don’t know what made me do it. I had the ring with me and was going to propose during the concert.
“But when Enrique asked if anyone wanted to come on stage, I just stuck up my hand and pointed to the ring box and was picked.
“It was a spur of the moment thing.”
For Sandwich man Mike Ashton, mere words were not enough - he decided to carve his question into the beach.
As girlfriend Beth, of Dane Hill Grove, Margate, celebrated her 18th birthday at the Winter Gardens overlooking the sea, she spotted a giant heart drawn into the sand with the words: “Beth Will You Marry Me?”
Mike’s gesture did not go unnoticed as patrons of a nearby fairground spotted it and shared pictures online.
Before long his proposal was a minor internet sensation.
Mike said: “I thought a proposal like this would be really cool to do. I had planned it quite a while. It took about an hour to do and a lot of running up and down the hill making sure it looked OK.
“I was so nervous when I took Beth there. I didn’t realise there was a funfair on!”
The course of true love doesn’t always run smooth, as the proposal by five-year-old Brad Terry proves.
The romantic schoolboy was practising popping the question to his girlfriend when the metal nut he was using as a ring became stuck on his right index finger.
After the school’s attempts to free Brad’s finger failed, firefighters had to be called to remove the nut.
But the worst thing? She said no.
Brad said: “I was going to marry my girlfriend because she’s a girl and I like her, but she said no so I put it on my finger anyway. I have a red mark on my finger.”
