Thieves causing manhole danger

Nineteen manhole covers have been stolen in Strood, putting lives at risk.

The covers, probably taken for their scrap metal value, were taken from areas across the town at the weekend. It will cost £7,500 to replace them.

A police spokesman said the thefts would put both pedestrians and motorists at unnecessary risk.

Cllr Phil Filmer, in charge of frontline services for Medway Council, said: “The criminals responsible for these thefts are putting the public in significant danger, for relatively small profit.

“These incidents are a national problem, and we are working with the police in Medway to identify the people responsible here.

“We would encourage local people to contact the police if they see anything suspicious.”

If anyone has any information relating to this type of crime they are asked to call the police on 01622 690690.
