DETECTIVES have launched an investigation into the third reported rape attack in the Luton area of Chatham in four months. It is believed a woman was grabbed and subjected to a vicious sex assault in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Institute Road, Chatham, less than half-a-mile away from where two other rapes were reported in January.
Officers taped off sections of Chatham Hill, Institute Road and the High Street. Jan Perry, head teacher of New Road Primary School in Bryant Street, Chatham, said: "We were very aware of the situation after the second attack as it was so close to the school and it affected female staff more than anyone else.
"The governors asked the caretaker to be present when any female was in the building alone or locking up and they said we could have panic alarms as well. Parents have said to me they now think twice about going out in the evening just to visit their friends and they are concerned that it makes them vulnerable."
Residents today spoke of their concerns as news of the police investigation spread. Paul Flack, 26, of Institute Road, who has two children, said: "It's really worrying. When you've got two kids you have to think about their safety and this is the last thing you want to hear. You start to think what could happen. "
Paul Benham, 42, of Institute Road, said his wife might think twice before taking their children to trampolining classes over the Great Lines again. "My wife already feels nervous sometimes. Obviously I'm very concerned, as I think everyone around here will be at this news."
At the start of the year a 22-year-old mother-of-three was subjected to a gang rape as she walked home from Chatham town centre. Six men dragged the woman into garages in Hare Street, near Luton Arches, taunting her with the words: "Do you want some fun?". Two gang members carried out the attack while the others just stood by and watched.
Three weeks later, a 20-year-old who popped out to buy some cigarettes was pounced on in Chalk Pit Hill.
She was dragged across playing fields at about 11pm to a secluded corner behind gardens in Hartington Street where she was raped.
