FIREFIGHTERS were using up to 12 pumps this afternoon to tackle a huge blaze among 1,000 tonnes of scrap cars at Ridham Dock, Iwade, near Sittingbourne.
Sheppey firefighters were among the crews at the fire which started among 1,000 tonnes of scrap cars at the European Metal Recycling car breakers' yard. Machinery was also damaged in the fire. It is not yet known how the fire started.
Firefighters said the main problem was getting water. Supplies were taken from the dock and from a nearby fire hydrant.
Crews used two hose units, a water bowser and a ladder to reach the seat of the blaze. Teams of firefighters were also being sent in with breathing apparatus.
Firefighters were called to the incident just after 1pm today and a Kent Fire Brigade spokeswoman predicted they would be at the scene for many hours.
A large plume of smoke from the site was visible on Sheppey and in Sittingbourne.
