A Faversham farmer has been left devastated after finding his rare breed flock had been attacked by two dogs.

John Shrubsall has described the scene at his field in Eastling as "carnage".

He made the discovery at 7am Sunday when he went to tend to his 10 sheep.

A Rottweiller and a Dogue De Bordeaux were found in the field along with one dead sheep and two more that had suffered such serious injuries that they had to be put down. The other seven sheep also had to receive treatment from the vet after sustaining cuts to their ears.

The sheep were all rare breed animals and were bred this year by Mr Shrubsall and his family who have shown them at agricultural shows across the country.

Mr Shrubsole, a judge and inspector for the Badger Face Sheep Society, said: "Eight were Badger Face Welsh Mountain Sheep and the other two were Zwartbles, a Dutch breed of dairy sheep.

"I am devastated at what has happened. We have spent years perfecting these blood lines and that has been destroyed in the space of 10 minutes. I doubt I will be able to breed from these sheep now."

The dogs were shot during the incident. Insp Steve Griffiths from Kent Police said: "The law allows a farmer to act to protect his livestock. We are still $investigating this incident and have yet to speak to the owner of the dogs."
