Met Office issues thunderstorm warning for Kent

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is in place across Kent.

The Met Office says isolated flooding and disruption is expected to hit the county from midday (Thursday).

The warning covers the whole of Kent and was issued just after 10am yesterday. It is due to remain in place until midnight.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

“There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.”

It says thunderstorms are more likely during the afternoon and evening, but possible at any time.

People are being advised to prepare a flood plan and an emergency flood kit if their location is at risk of flooding. Lighting will be an additional hazard.

The Met Office is advising people to make sure moveable objects such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences are well secured.

Drivers should also check road conditions if driving, as well as bus and train timetables.
